After the exertions of Derry Cairngorm and Ben Macdui on Monday we were feeling a bit stiff so were looking for an easier walk to take advantage of the conditions. Decided to revisit Sgor Mor.
We reported this one a few years ago – ascending Carn an ‘lc Duibhe from the south and returning via Glen Luibeg. On this occasion we wanted to ascend Carn an ‘lc Duibhe from the N side.
Didn’t kick off til 0930. Took the track out to Glen Lui. We had planned to go to the bridge and head up the west bank of Lui Water to ascend between Creag an Diuchd and the first forest patch on grassy terrain but the snow allowed a direct ascent just to the S of the Creag an Diuchd crags.
For just 120m of ascent the views open beautifully. Derry Cairngorm and round through Beinn a Bhuird loom large.
From here the terrain is all easy sloped, patches of heather are short, and snow patches abound.
The snow patches between Carn an ‘lc Duibhe and Sgor Dubh were fairly crusty but giving every 4th step or so slowed progress.
Last time we headed N over Creagan nan Gabhar to pick up the Derry Lodge to Corrour Bothy track. This gets great views of Bod an Deamhain.
This time we simply reversed route – a bit shorter and holding the high views.
Sgor Mor is a real corker of a viewpoint – the north access to Carn an ‘lc Duibhe gains the views very quickly. A nice relaxing warm-down from Macdui.
